Capability 03

Legacy Modernisation and Migration

Controlled movement from fragile or limiting systems to a safer future state without destabilising the operation that depends on them.

  • Reduced operational and technical risk
  • A staged route rather than a forced big bang
  • Recovered knowledge and documentation
  • A clear decision on what to retain, rebuild or retire

When it matters

A legacy system is not simply an old system. It becomes a constraint when knowledge is disappearing, changes are unsafe, infrastructure is unsupported, integrations are opaque or the organisation cannot adapt without disproportionate cost.

What the work can include

  • discovery and institutional-knowledge recovery;
  • current-state architecture and dependency mapping;
  • stabilisation before migration;
  • staged replacement and strangler-pattern planning;
  • cloud and infrastructure migration;
  • data migration, reconciliation and rollback design;
  • deciding what to retain, rebuild, buy or retire;
  • cutover, operational readiness and post-migration assurance.

Our approach

We do not begin by assuming that everything should be replaced. The first task is to understand where value, knowledge and risk actually sit. We prefer staged and reversible decisions, with explicit validation and rollback points. The organisation must continue operating while the underlying system changes.

The intended result

Modernisation should leave the organisation with more control: clearer ownership, better observability, safer change and less reliance on a small number of people or suppliers.

Tell us what is becoming difficult.

You do not need to arrive with a technical specification. A description of the organisation, the problem and what is currently preventing progress is enough to begin.
